What makes your work and working time model special and what benefits do you see?

It is not so unusual with paternity leave in Sweden. What was special with this situation was that it was a request from my side on a very short notice, and that the working weeks were split with my wife. This gave me the opportunity to spend some more time with my son, and also keep in touch with my work and colleagues. I also worked from home when my son was sleeping during the day. It was a great benefit for me personally and for my family, it really helped my wife in getting back to work quickly after a long absence from the job market due to studies and maternity leave, and I got a better contact with my son.

Please describe your typical day/work week (e.g. when does your working day start/end? Where do you work? What is your personal work-life balance principle?).

Normally we split the weeks so we worked every other day, meaning working Monday, Wednesday and Friday one week, and Tuesday, Thursday the next. If one of us had an important meeting or could not be away a specific day we moved the days around, but always balanced so we got 50% each at work.

What advantages does your line manager have in supporting your work model?

I was in the middle of a quite important project, so my manager could not release me fully on such a short notice. We are a small department which makes it difficult to cover for someone for a longer time. We also got some additional remote support from the local IT office in Spain, which really helped. Our goal was to have no noticeable impact for our end users.

Did the opportunity to work under flexible conditions significantly influence your decision to continue working?

Yes, this really proved to me that Henkel is an employer that cares about their staff. It was a pragmatic approach that after several good discussions was unanimously decided to be the best possible solution for all involved parties.
