“Don’t ever think ‘What if I am no good at this?’ If your superior offers you a position, it is because he or she is convinced that you can make a significant contribution. When you doubt yourself too much, you cannot deliver best results.”
|Business Unit:||Henkel Beauty Care|
|Job title:||Corporate Vice President Adhesives|
When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
Nurse, singer, ballet dancer and then, for many years, veterinarian. But that became unpopular when my cat’s tail got partly cut off by accident and I had to watch the vet cut off even more of the tail with an electric bread knife.
What has motivated you to take on a position of high responsibility within Henkel?
In general, motivation is something that you have to find within yourself. Apart from that, I like to be challenged and to improve on the status quo. Asking for bigger projects and new/more responsibility seems all natural, once you have proven that you have mastered the field you’ve been working in.
What were the milestones in your career and are there people or circumstances that have favored your career?
Milestones: quitting medicine (my first ‘failure’), my decision to join Schwarzkopf after university, turning around one of our brand icons, stepping out of marketing and taking on responsibility as a country GM. I was lucky to have had superiors who challenged me and fostered my development. The role model I aspire to in being a leader is my father.
What is your advice to women seeking to build careers?
Don’t ever think ‘What if I am no good at this?’ If your superior offers you a position, it is because he or she is convinced that you can make a significant contribution. When you doubt yourself too much, you cannot deliver best results.
